The reason for codes and conventions of a music magazine are to that it allows the audience to become familiar with a certain genre as the become accustomed to recognising different things in different genres, and it ensures that a certain text works well and fits into it's genre, because of these reasons, people tend not to challenge these rules to greatly.
Music videos can be categorized in terms of style, which are:
- Performance - Band/Artist playing.
- Narrative - Includes a story being told.
- Mixture - Both performance and narrative.
- Cameo - Band/Artist features in the narrative but doesn't perform.
- Animation - Digitally/Stop-frame
Camera
A variety of camera shots are used in music videos, to portray certain things or to emphasise something, some of the popular ones are:
- Close ups (especially in performance music videos)
Sometimes extreme close ups are used to focus on lips, guitar strings being strummed, or maybe the feature of a person, that the artist is singing about.
- Crane shots - Hovering over stage.
- Low angles
- Long shots and Extreme long shots.
- Pans - moving from different performers
- Tracking.
Editing And Sound
There are many different editing techniques used when putting together a music video, these are some of them:
- Many music videos include jump cutting.
- Footage is usually edited after filming, so that it matches the music.
- Split screens/CGI
- Diegetic sound is sometimes included if appropriate to song/video.
- Change in levels of sound.
Editing is a critical part when it comes to finalising your music video, editing allows producers to ensure that the music is in time with the artist, especially as it is lip sinced.
Mise en scene
The mise en scene of the music video is a big part, its what the audience see's, and helps them make up their mind as wether they want to continue watching the video. Many artists use props, such as band merchandise, to make it clear that the audience know who they are.

Pop Genre Research

PSY - Gentleman.
After watching the video I began to understand the Characteristics of the artist, I interpreted that he was not the kindest of people to women, however, when he meets a women, with the same humourous features as him, he changes into a 'gentleman' being mocked by the woman, and treated in the same way, as he was treating women.
The video fits the criteria of a Pop music video, there is a fixed dance routine that occurs at the chorous of the song, through out the whole video, in many Pop music videos, the artists dances, supported by back up dancers. The artist is well known for his 'obsured' dance routines, and this is abundant in this music video. Throughout the whole 3/4 minutes, the scene is very white and bright, this connotes that it is a happy environment, showing that the song is meant to be taken light heartedly, and his been created for enjoyment, and not for someone to relate to. There are also a lot of special effects which make the video more playful, for example... The artist is slung backwards on a diving board whilst sitting down. I think the frequent use of water, refers to the sexual terms he reffered to earlier in the song. This is a narrative music video, as it tells a story of the artist.
